The agricultural industry is directly
related to the food we eat. For each person in the world there
must be a producer producing the food that person needs. According
to Revenue Canada, today, one agricultural producer in Saskatchewan
grows enough food to feed 95 people.
|
There are a number of types of agricultural
enterprises in Saskatchewan: grain; livestock; mixed, or grain and livestock; and, alternative crops.
|
The prairie provinces contain 75% of
Canada's agricultural land. Of the three prairie provinces Saskatchewan
has the most agricultural land. Saskatchewan farmers cultivate
about 48 million acres of land and use nearly 18 million acres
as pasture for livestock production.
|
Unimproved land, that is those areas
that remain as native rangeland or bush pasture, occupies 20%
to 25% of Saskatchewan farmland. Some of this land has been abused
and overgrazed.
|
New techniques in rangeland management have increased
the awareness of the agricultural industry. Many owners are taking
the initiative to increase the productivity of these lands, as
well as to preserve and protect the wildlife associated with the
area.
