Educational guide to Saskatchewan
Agriculture

Cereal production still dominates Saskatchewan's agriculture but farmers continue to diversify into oilseed (canola, sunflower etc.) and pulse production (lentils, peas etc.). Speciality crops are becoming more widespread including several herbs and spices. Your next curry could have spices from Saskatchewan! The Pork industry is poised for major expansion and some livestock farms are producing game animals such as Elk and even Ostrich!. From the rangelands of the south west; through the rich, black soils of central Saskatchewan; and to the forests of the north, the agricultural industry spans the Province and is the largest single contributor to the economy - accounting for 11-12% of the Province's total GDP.

Environment

Ten thousand years ago the landscape of Saskatchewan was scoured by enormous glaciers. Retreating glaciers, over the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield, left meltwaters (which formed thousands of lakes), massive rock outcroppings, and thin glacial deposits of soil. To the south, glacial deposition of softer sedimentary rocks left a thick layer of soil which was widespread. It was here that the grasslands of the Great Plains grew and the buffalo roamed. In no other part of Canada are the zonal relationships between climate, soil, and vegetation so clearly displayed. What effect has recent human settlement, and in particular agricultural development, had on the Saskatchewan landscape?

Fisheries

Remnants from the last ice age, freshwater lakes abound in the province, creating a freshwater fisherman's dream. The cold, deep lakes of the north are home to such prized specimens as the beautiful "sailfish of the north" also known as the arctic grayling, the fighting walleye, the predatory northern pike and the illusive lake sturgeon. Learn how the fishing industry encompases both the sport fisherman and the commercial fisherman. Recently, Saskatchewan has been in the limelight for exporting rainbow trout from one of the commercial aquaculture operations...located in south-central Saskatchewan. Come and take a closer look at the freshwater fisheries on the prairies.

Forestry

Driving across southern Saskatchewan, one might not think of the forestry industry as being a major force to the Province's economy. However, over half of the province is covered by this renewable resource and the associated industry is thriving in the north. Forest management today makes it possible to continue to use the forests and renew them at the same time. Did you know that the "pulse" of the forest can be taken by studying the animals that live there? Find out how we use the 5,000 different products the forest provides, and take a trip back in time by visiting the history section.

Mining

With a total land area of 570,269 square kilometers, and its northern half biting into the Candian Shield, Saskatchewan is one of the wealthiest regions in natural resource in the world. Uranium and potash are the two top minerals produced from Saskatchewan mines, but did you know that gold, diamonds, salt, coal, oil, natural gas, clays, and other minerals are hiding just below the surface. Find out where in this section.

Tourism

With more outdoor activities than anywhere else in Canada, Saskatchewan is the land of nature, wildlife and beauty. Experience virtual reality technology as you transcend time, space, and season. Explore spectacular settings through the concept of Virtual Field Trips (VFT).
Visit the resting place of Scotty the Tyranosaurus Rex. Did you know that sixty-five million years ago, Saskatchewan was home to the most ferocious beast to ever walk the face of the earth? See "Mystery Rocks"; are they just a strange joke played by nature or were they really placed here by intelligent alien lifeforms?
