Splake (Salvelinus fontinalis)

Description

The splake is an example of hybridization (a cross between unlike parents). Hybridization can occur naturally or as a result of selective breeding by fish farms. The splake is an example of a farmed crossbreed.

Splake is the result of the fertilization of brook trout eggs with lake trout sperm. The species is not self-perpetuating and stocks must be produced in hatcheries. Splake can grow to as much as 7.26 kg. The are considered excellent sport fish. In Saskatchewan, certain lakes are stocked with this species.
