As in all walks of life, Saskatchewan forest management has entered
the computer and technological age.
A sophisticated Geographic Information System analyzes
and displays the forest resources in map form. Computers estimate
the volumes of commercial species.
|
Plans include using satellite imagery to enhance forest inventories.
As well, technology is helping to expand the inventory to include
such information as unique ecological areas, wildlife habitat
and special forest products. Advances in biotechnology and genetics will help foresters produce
healthier, faster growing trees. New technology to control environmental
factors in greenhouses will result in better quality, easier-to-plant
seedlings in less time.

With hard work, new technology, innovative research, good planning
and cooperation, Saskatchewan's potential to effectively manage
the forest ecosystem has never been greater.
