Gabriel Dumont 1838 - 1906

Born in Assiniboia, Rupert's Land, Gabriel Dumont won early fame as a buffalo hunter. Around 1868, he founded the Metis camp which became St. Laurent, and in 1873, Dumont became first president of the local government. In 1884, he led a party to Montana to bring back Louis Riel. He commanded the Metis forces in 1885, and displayed considerable military ability. After the fall of Batoche, he escaped to the United States. Gabriel Dumont returned years later and resumed the life of a hunter.
