Great Sand Hills

GPS: 50d 40.54m N 109d 16.92m W 2496 feet
Location: 20 kms east and 4 kms north of Liebenthal.

It is 1900 square kilometres of active dunes, high stable dunes and sand flats which together make up the Great Sand Hills.

The Great Sand Hills are in fact the remains of a delta from an ancient glacier river.

Most are stable dunes covered with sage brush, natural prairie grasses and other plants.

You may be able to see mule deer and antelope at the edge of the grassland along the sand hills.

The active dunes comprise only a small portion of the vast land tract, but the view they provide is absolutely dazzling.
