In the mid-1800s, a number of French aristocrats, including Counts Roffignac, Jumilhac, Beaudrap, and Soras, and Dr. Rudolph Meyer, settled at Whitewood. Although their attempts to recreate old world society failed, and they returned to France before World War I, they left a romantic tradition; St. Hubert's Church and the colony which they founded formed the nucleus of a permanent community in this vicinity.
