William Richard Motherwell (1860-1943) was an eminent Canadian. He was the first President of the Territorial Grain Growers Association, Saskatchewan's first Minister of Agriculture, from 1921 to 1930, and served as Federal Agriculture Minister.

Richard established the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. He retired from politics in 1939 at the age of 79.

Born in Lanark County, Ontario, Motherwell went west in 1882. He acquired a 160 acre homestead grant in the Pheasant Hills district of southeastern Saskatchewan. In the 1890's, he began to build an eight acre farmstead that he named Lanark Place.

Parks Canada has restored Motherwell's homestead to the 1910-14 period. The restoration project includes the home, barn, outbuildings and the beautifully treed landscape.

The Ontario style barn is typical of many barns built in the area, though few others could match its size.
