Horse Production

horse care

Horses are generally raised in small groups seldom exceeding a size of fifty animals. Typically they are raised for pleasure riding purposes. Breeders raising animals for the recreational rider will want a horse that is attractive, and has a sound body. A good temperament is also a necessity for a high quality riding horse.

Because of the expense of maintaining a large number of animals, many horse breeders are required to send mares to breeding farms because it is not profitable to keep a stallion of their own. A breeder will be charged a stud fee for the mare to be bred by a particular stallion. Stud fees can vary greatly depending on the genetic potential and quality of the male. While horses can be raised on pasture, the greatest expense to horse production includes the cost of feed and housing. The feed industry for horse products is not merely based on the nutritional quality of the feed. Many specialty or fancy feeds are marketed at very high prices while supplying no further nutritional value over conventional feed sources.

The production goals of any horse owner will vary, yet they should all include providing a suitable living environment which permits exercise and a feeding program which meets the nutritional requirements of the animal at a low cost.
