In 1874 the North-West Mounted Police force introduced a new chapter of law enforcement on the Canadian plains. On July 8th, six troops, consisting of 275 men and 310 horses, marched out from Dufferin, Manitoba. Led by Commissioner G. A. French, they were bound for the foothills, some 900 miles westward. By July 24th, they had reached this spot. After a rest of several days, the Commissioner decided to split the column. 'A' Troop, led by Inspector W. D. Jarvis, was sent via Fort Ellice and Carlton to Fort Edmonton. Troops 'B, C, D, E and F' continued westerly via Old Wives Lake and north of the Cypress Hills, after suffering incredible hardships. Commissioner French's command reached the Old Man River October 13th, and Inspector Jarvis' command reached Edmonton on October 27th. |
