Joseph Burr Tyrrell
1858 - 1957

Joseph Burr Tyrrell, for whom a nearby lake is named, was an eminent geographer, geologist, mining engineer, surveyor and historian. Appointed a member of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1881, his surveys greatly advanced the knowledge of the topography, glacial features, bedrock geology and paleontology of vast areas of Manitoba, the North-West Territories and the Rocky Mountains. He discovered the dinosaur remains of the Red Deer Valley and confirmed the first oil discovery in Alberta. He edited the journals of Samuel Hearne, Philip Turner and David Thompson and other fur trade documents for publication by the Champlain Society.
