Saskatchewan's Ecoregions in Detail
Materials:
one of A Saskatchewan Ecoregion, Saskatchewan road maps, large papers or poster
board, markers, scissors, glue, Saskatchewan travel brochures
and magazines
Method:
1. Obtain a copy of A Saskatchewan Ecoregion (one ecoregion).
2. a) Create a poster depicting that ecoregion on a large map
of Saskatchewan such as a highways map or outline of Saskatchewan
drawn on poster board.
b) The ecoregion under consideration should be coloured and identified
in a large title at the top of the poster.
c) The plants, animals, climate, land use and soils of the ecoregion
should be depicted on the poster with pictures or large print.
d) Use a tree identification book and draw silhouettes of typical
trees found in each region.
e) Look through magazines, travel brochures, or your own photo
albums at home to find pictures representing typical scenes, vegetation,
or wildlife that may be found in that area. Add these to the map.
Extensions:
Show photos or sketches of forested lands in different parts
of the province. Quiz other students about components of ecoregions
and try to develop a hypothesis regarding where the photo was
taken, by identifying trees in the pictures.
