Douglas Provincial Park is located on the lake created by the construction of the Gardiner and Qu'Appelle Valley Dams along the South Saskatchewan River. Lake Diefenbaker was formed in 1967 when the Gardiner Dam was built. This prairie oasis is in the "Prairie Schooner" tourism region and is great for fishing, sailing and windsurfing. There are miles of natural sand beaches, large inland sand dunes, native prairie grasslands, lush aspen woodlands and secluded campsites (over 6,144 hectares of natural environment). The park is open year-round. The Elbow Harbour Marina and Resort is also nearby.
Access to the north end of the lake is via Danielson Provincial Park, located next to the Gardiner Dam. The visitor centre here orients you to flora and fauna of the area and points of interest. Nearby is the Coteau Creek Generating Station, where a self-guided tour explains how the hydro power project was made possible at Gardiner Dam, the largest earth filled dam in Canada. This park is also open year round and its sandy beaches and great fishing make this a favorite vacation getaway for families. While in the area, stop by the Heritage Marsh near Lucky Lake where Ducks Unlimited has designed a self-guided tour. The waters of this area are important in that they are a stopping point for migratory shorebirds -- they feed here before continuing on their long journeys. Migrating waterfowl use the area as a staging area.
