Adaptation
any characteristic of an organism which helps them survive their environment; natural selection tends to establish adaptations in a population

Adaptive radiation
evolution from a common ancestor to a number of different species due to adaptation to new environments

Agnatha
class of vertebrates represented in Saskatchewan by the Chestnut Lamprey; aquatic, jawless, absence of paired fins

Algae
simple, photosynthetic plants; lack vascular tissue (roots, stems, leaves) and require water for reproduction

Anal fin
an unpaired fin; located on the underside along the middle and after the anus

Analogous
an organ or structure of one species is said to be analogous to an organ or structure of another organism when both structures have the same function; analogous structures do not necessarily indicate a close relationship between the organisms being compared but an adaptation to similar conditions... for example, the fins of a fish are analogous to the fins of a whale

structural characteristics of an organism

Annelida
ringed or segmented worms (earthworms, leeches)

Anterior
the front end of a bilaterally symmetrical organism

Aorta
main vessel (artery) carrying blood away from the heart and to the body

Aquaculture
the farming of fish; aqua = water ; culture= to grow

Artery
smooth muscle, thick-walled blood vessel which carries blood from the heart towards the body

Arthropod
a member of a phylum of invertebrate animals; segmented body and limbs and presence of an exoskeleton

Auditory organ
sense-organ for detecting sound
