Salinity
the level of dissolved salts in water; freshwater is usually less than 0.2% and seawater is over 3%

Scales
covering of fish composed of dead material similar in substance to that which composes our fingernails; can be either cycloid (with smooth rear edges) or ctenoid (with serrated rear edges) in bony fishes

Scientific nomenclature
system of naming organisms, known as binomial nomenclature; use of Latin and two name (that of genus/species) to identify biological organisms.

Secretion
the release of some substances from the blood

Spawning
the act of reproduction in fish; the female lays the eggs and the male fertilizes the eggs by releasing milt (contains sperm)

Species
a genetically distinct group, consisting of related individuals that resemble each other in appearance and behavior, and can breed among themselves but not, with some exceptions, with other species

Spleen
an organ within the digestive system which helps to removes waste products from the blood.

Subsidiary
a company controlled by another company

Swim bladder
gas-filled air or swim bladder - located between the stomach and kidneys to help the fish maintain its buoyancy; a fish can alter the amount of gas (usually oxygen) in the bladder thus maintaining a chosen depth in the water without constantly swimming
