Fallout
the radioactive material released into the atmosphere by activities such as the detonation of nuclear weapons, accidental emissions from nuclear power plants or natural occurrences (e.g. the eruption of Mount St. Helens) that is transferred to the Earth

Fission
the splitting of a large atomic nucleus, releasing large amounts of energy and neutrons

Floodplain
a generally flat land surface adjacent to a stream produced by deposition of stream sediment during periods when the stream overflows its banks and moves onto the floodplain

Fossil
any evidence of past life, including impressions, tracks, trails, hard parts, and skeletons

Fossil fuel
any form of natural hydrocarbon that may be used as fuel. Includes petroleum, natural gas, and coal. All fossil fuels are altered carbohydrates and represent stored solar energy

Fuel bundles
containers holding uranium pellets; used to fuel nuclear reactors

Fusion
the combining of small atomic nuclei to form heavier nuclei, resulting in the release of large amounts of energy and neutrons
