Half-life
the time it takes for half of the atoms of an unstable substance to change to the next substance in the decay chain

Hardrock
minerals or rock (such as quartz, copper, zinc, uranium) which can be mined only by blasting and drilling

Heavy water
a form of water occurring at a level of 1 part heavy water per 7000 in natural water; contains a variant (isotope) form of hydrogen having a larger mass than normal hydrogen; used to slow down the speed of neutrons during the fission process in CANDU reactors in order to increase the incidence of fission necessary to perpetuate the chain reaction

Hydration
the chemical combination of water with other substances. Water becomes part of the resulting chemical compound

Hydrocarbon
an organic chemical compound containing hydrogen and carbon; may contain oxygen. Both oil and coal are hydrocarbons.
