B Horizon
- The mineral soil horizon in between the surface A horizon and the C horizon. The horizon shows characteristics such as accumulation of salts, clays, iron and aluminum compounds and organic matter from layers above and usually has strucural development. Characteristics designated by subscript(s) e.g. Bnt horizon contains accumulation of sodium and clay and has a strong columnar structure which is characteristic of Solonetzic soils
B Vitamins-
Niacin, thiamine and riboflavin. Vitamins added to or used
to enrich bread, flour and cereals to help combat nutritional
deficiencies.
Bedrock-
The solid rock that underlies the soil and other unconsolidated material or that is exposed at the surface.
BHA &
BHT-
BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) & BHT
(butylated hydroxytolulene) are preservatives that block
oxidization in fats and oils, preventing rancidity. These
chemicals can also be found in snacks, cereals and instant
potatoes.
Biotechnology-
The application of biological science to the production, modification or processing of materials. It encompasses long-established activities such as traditional plant and animal breeding, brewing, bread-making and effluent treatment, and the more modern techniques of genetic modification and the use of fermentation technology for the production of some novel protein foods.
Broadcast-
Application of solid or liquid
fertilizer or other agrichemical on the soil surface.
The application of material can be scattered or sprayed.
Biotechnology-
Use of microorganisms, plant cells, and animal cells or parts of cells
(such as enzymes) to produce new varieties.
Birth Weight-
Weight of the calf taken within 24 hours of its birth.
Bovine-
Refers to a general family grouping of cattle.
Brand-
Permanent identification of cattle, usually made on the hide with
hot-iron or freeze branding.
Breed-
Cattle of common origin and having characteristics that distinguish
them from other groups within the same species.
Brown Soils-
A great soil group of the temperate
to cool arid regions, composed of soils with a brown
surface and a light-colored transitional subsurface
horizon over calcium carbonate accumulation.
Brucellosis-
Contagious bacterial disease that results in abortion; also called
Bang's disease.
Bulk Density-
Mass of dry soil per unit bulk volume. The volume includes the solid particles and the pore space. The value is expressed as g per cm3 or in SI units as Mg per cubic meter, Mg m-3.
Bullock-
Young bull, typically less than 20 months of age.
