Earthworms
Animals of the Lumbricidae family that burrow and live in soil. They mix soils with plant residues, aerate soil and leave behind nutrient rich casts.

Ecology
The interactions between living organisms and their environment

Ecosystem
An interacting system of living organisms, soil and climatic factors.

Edaphology
Science that concerns the influence of soil on living things, particularly plants, including human use of land for plant growth.

Emulsifier
An additive used in the preparation and processing of foods, used to blend or mix ingredients together and keep them from separating.

Erosion
The wearing away of the land surface by wind, water, ice, or other geological agents.

Evapotranspiration
The combined loss of water from a given area in a specified time by evaporation from the soil surface and transpiration from plant cover.

Esker
Narrow ridge of gravel or sandy material deposited by stream running from a tunnel or valley in a glacier.

Eukaryote
An organism whose cells contain nuclei. All organisms except the bacteria are eukaryotes.

Exchange Capacity
The total ionic charge of the adsorptive complex of soil which includes largely the clay minerals, hydrous oxides and organic matter.
