Ration-
Feed fed to an animal during a 24-hour period.
Reaction, Soil-
The degree of acidity or alkalinity of a soils as measured by pH. Neutral soils have a pH of about 6.6 to 7.3. Strongly acid soils less than pH 5.0 and strongly alkaline soils greater than pH 8.5.
Real Density-
See particle density
Registered-
Recorded in the herdblood of a breed.
Relief-
The difference between high and low areas of a landscape.
Residual material-
Unconsolidated or partly weathered rock in place.
Rhizobia-
Microorganisms that are capable of living symbiotically with higher plants. They form nodules on the root surface of legumes from which they receive energy from photosynthetic activity of the plant. In return the rhizobia fix or convert atmospheric nitrogen to an organic form the plant can use.
Rhizosphere-
The soil region immediately surrounding plant roots which creates a nutrient rich environment rich for the growth of microorganisms
Rill-
Small shallow intermittent water course or ditch with steep sides. No obstacle to tillage. e.g. rill erosion.
Root Nodules-
Small round lumps or swellings on roots that contain the rhizobia microrganisms which are responsible for symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
Rotation, Crop-
The management of land by planting a series of crops, pasture or fallowing to maximise production while sustaining land quality and controlling pests and disease.
Roughage-
Feed that is high in fiber, low in digestible nutrients, and low in
energy e.g., hay, straw, silage, and pasture.
Ruminant-
Mammal whose stomach has four partsÑrumen, reticulum, omasum, and
abomasum. e.g Cattle, sheep, goats, deer.
