Halophyte-
A plant that tolerates or thrives in a saline environment
HACCP-
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a preventive system of food control. It involves examining and analysing every stage of a food-related operation to identify and assess hazards; determining the 'critical control points' at which action is required to control the identified hazards; establishing the critical limits that must be met at, and procedures to monitor, each critical control point; establishing corrective procedures when a deviation is identified by monitoring; documentation of the HACCP plan and verification procedures to establish that it is working correctly.
Heifer-
Young female bovine cow prior to the time that she has produced her
first calf.
Herbage-
The biomass of herbaceous plants, other than separated grain, generally
above ground but including edible roots and tubers
Herd-
Group of cattle that are in a similar management program.
Heterotrophic-
Obtaining energy and carbon for growth from organic materials
Horizon-
A soil layer approximately parallel to the earth's surface with definite physical and chemical characterisitcs
Host-
A living plant on which a parasite develops
Humus-
A dark coloured fraction of soil organic matter formed during the decomposition of organic residues.
Hydroxyapatite-
A nearly insoluble calcium phosphate mineral rich in hydroxyl groups. Can be used as a fertilizer in very acid soils when finely divided, or converted to more soluble fertilizers with acid treatment.
Hydrolysis-
The chemical reaction between water and a compound usually a salt. The hydroxyl from water combines with a cation from the compound resulting in hydrolysis to form a base. The hydrogen from water reacts with the anion from the compound to form an acid.
Hyphae-
Branched or unbranched filaments usually from fungi but also from algae and some bacteria.
