Saline Soil-
A soil containing sufficient soluble salts to interfere with its productivity but not with excessive sodium. The conductivity of a saturation extract is greater than 4dS/m, an exchageable sodium percentage (ESP) of less than 15 and the pH is usually less than 8.5.
Semiarid-
A region in which moisture limits the grwoth of plants. SSpecial dryland management or irrigation is needed fro successful crop production.
Silt-
A soil separate cosisting of particles between 0.05 an 0.002mm in diameter.
Sodic Soil-
A soil with an exchangeable sodium percentage of 15 or greater in a saturation extract. This level of sodium will interfere with the growth of most plants.
Soil Science-
The science dealing with soil as a natural resource including: soil formation, classification and mapping, soil physics, chemistry and biology and soil fertility and management.
Solum-
The soil profile above the parent material (C horizon). i.e. the O, A and B horizons.
Sorbitol-
A sweetener that also helps retain moisture.
Steer-
Bovine male castrated prior to puberty.
Sulfites-
Antioxidants used primarily to prevent discoloration in
dried fruits and other preserved products and to retard
bacteria growth in wine. A small number of people may react
adversely to sulfites, with problems varying from difficulty
breathing to hives to stomachache to anaphylactic shock.
Sulfite-sensitive people should avoid foods whose labels list
the sulfites sulfur dioxide, sodium sulfite, sodium or
potassium bisulfite, and sodium or potassium metabisulfite.
Summerfallow-
see Fallow.
Symbiosis-
the living together in intimate assocaition of two dissimilar organisms, the collaboration being mutually beneficial. e.g. the Rhizobia bacteria in association with leguminous plants.
