Illuvial Horizon
A soil horizon that has received solution or suspension from the horizons above. A layer of accumulation. Contrast with eluviation.

Indigenous
Native to an area. e.g. Indigenous plants and animals.

Integrated Pest Management
A combination of management techniques to control pests such as chemical spraying, using resistant palnt varieties, tillage, crop rotations etc.

Integrated Resource Management (IRM)
Multidisciplinary approach to managing cattle more efficiently and profitably; management decisions are based on how all resources are affected.

Inoculation
Process of introducing cultures of bacteria into soils, seeds etc. Adding Rhizobia culture to a legume seed such as alfalfa.

Iodine
A mineral added to salt to prevent a goiter, an iodine-deficiency condition.

Ions
Atoms or groups of atoms that are electrically charged as a result of the loss (cation) or gain of electrons (anion).

Iron
Mineral added to foods to help prevent anemia and other iron-deficiency diseases.

Irradiated
Having been subjected to ionising radiation e.g. gamma rays.

Irrigation
Manner in which water is artificially applied to crop land. e.g Sprinkler irrigation - water is sprayed over the soil surface using a pressurized system.
