Gene
Segment of DNA in the chromosome that codes for a trait and determines how a trait will develop.

Germ
The embryo within a seed.

Glacial Till
Unstratified (not layered) drift deposited directly by the ice. Consists of a mixture of clays, sands and gravels often with large boulders mixed together in any proportion

Glaciofluvial
Material moved by galciers and later sorted and redeposited by streams and rivers flowing from the melting ice. The deposits are stratified and can form outwash plains, deltas, kames and eskers.

Glycerine
An food additive used to retain moisture and to keep marshmallows and candies soft.

Grade and Yield
Marketing transaction whereby payment is made on the bases of carcass weight and quality grade.

Graminae
Family within the Plant Kingdom that includes grains and grasses.

Grass
Members of the plant family Poaceae.

Great Group
A subdivision of soil Order in the system of soil classification. Generally contains soils with similar horizons in the same sequence that have formed under similar climate and vegetation; e.g. Chenozemic Black soils belong to the Chernozemic Order in the Black Great Group.

Green Manure
Any crop that is grown expressly to be plowed or dug under so as to improve the soil.
